PTSD symptoms can be grouped most times into four types; examples of these four are provided.
Intrusive memories
Reliving the traumatic event
Recurrent memories of the traumatic event
Disturbing nightmares or dreams of the event
Severe physical and emotional reactions to things that remind you of the event
Negative changes in thinking
Feeling disconnected from family and friends
Difficulty keeping close friends
Hopelessness of the future
Feeling negative towards yourself, or others in the world
Avoidance
Trying to stay away from places or activities that remind you of the event
Overthinking the traumatic event
Changes in your physical and emotional reactions
Easily startled or frightened
Constantly on guard
Overwhelming guilt or shame
Self-destructive or endangering behaviours
Aggressive behaviours, angry outbursts or irritability
